Year 1 Curriculum

Information about the subjects we teach in School can be found in our Subject Areas.

Please see the Year 1 Parent Leaflet for details of the end of year expectations for children in Year 1.

Phonics

At Holy Family we use the Sounds-Write phonics programme to teach our children to read, spell and write.

In Year 1 we begin our journey through the ‘Extended Code’ following on from children completing the ‘Initial Code’ in Reception Class.  Sounds-Write is a fabulous phonics scheme that focuses not only on sounds, but also on how we write those sounds.    Phonics is taught daily in Year 1.

Reading

Reading follows the Sounds-Write decodable reading scheme. We use the Sounds-Write recommended reading books in Year 1.  The children will either have a Dandelion reading book or a Sounds-Write reading book.  Along side these books, we will also send home a ‘read with me’ book that the children may need some support with.  Each week the children can also choose a book from the School Library to take home to promote reading for pleasure.

Reading is a core part of our entire curriculum. We aim to read with the children twice a week in class and will change reading books as needed, but if the children need to change their book at any other time, they can put it in the box for changing.

Reading at home is really beneficial to the progress that your child will make.  Please read with your child as much as possible and make a note in their reading record where they get up to and any concerns/difficulties they may have had.

Maths

We follow the National Curriculum for Maths, supported by (but not exclusively) the White Rose Maths scheme.
